10 Tips for Choosing a Domain Name

Just like choosing your company name, there is a lot consider when choosing a domain name. Your Domain Name is your permanent identity on the Web! Choose wisely! These 10 tips should help you out. If you need more help, give me a call. Or send me an email stating with the domain name you are considering, and I'll help you evaluate or maybe improve it!

1. Make it short

The longer your domain name, the more likely your customers will mistype it. It's also a pain to type long domain names, especially if you choose to use your domain name for your business email. So, don't choose "thebestcarpetcleanerintown.com". Rule of thumb is to keep it under 15-20 letters.

2. Make it easy to type

If your domain name is hard to pronounce or spell, your customers will get confused. And I discourage using weird letter abbreviations like 4U, as in "bestcleaner4u.com". Don't do it!

3. Maybe add a keyword

Keywords include "cleaner", "cleaning", "carpet", "clean", "rugs", "home". For example, "jakescleaning.com" has the keyword "cleaning". This is good for Google searaches.

4. Target your area

Also, consider adding an area name, city, or state in your domain name to make it easy for local customers to find and remember. Example: seattlecarpetcleaner.com.

5. Avoid numbers in your domain name

If you say your domain name out loud, people won't know if you're using a numeral, like 6, or if it's spelled out like "six". If you need these in your domain, register both. For example "6pandascleaning.com" AND "sixpandascleaning.com". We can point BOTH to your website, no problem.

6. Be Memorable

Unless you have a really easy-to-remember name, you might avoid using your personal name in your domain name. Your name might be perfectly lovely, but people won't remember "jurgenprochnowcleaning.com"

7. Research your ideas

Don't select a domain name that is trademarked or copyrighted or infringes on another company. At best you'll be asked to cease and desist using it. At worst you'll be sued. Don't use, "pepsicolacarpetcleaning.com" or "justinbiebercleaner.com".

8. Choose an appropriate and available Domain Name Extension

Here, we're talking about the .COM or .NET, at the end of web address. .COM is probably the most trusted, but it's also the most saturated. Using other .somethings are becoming a little more trusted and memorable. So, I'd recommend sticking with these for carpet cleaners:

  • .com : of course, the most popular. Use it if possible.
  • .cc : if you can't find a good .com, I like .cc because cc could stand for "carpet cleaner".
  • .info : information about your cleaning business? It's a stretch, but doable.

9. Buy multiple domain names. They're cheap.

They can all point to the same website, but to protect your brand, you might consider purchasing various domain extensions, as well as misspelled versions of your domain name. This prevents competitors from registering other versions and ensures your customers are directed to your website, even if they mistype it.

10. Act fast

Domain names sell quickly. Thankfully, they're also inexpensive, so register your favorite domain names as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble finding an available name, domain registrars like GoDaddy will suggest alternate names during your domain search to help you find the perfect name.
